9 Oct: Athens

Today we woke up early for breakfast (free stuff, cannot miss) and the hotel dude sent us to the port. We booked the ticket to Rafina port instead of Piraeus which is the main port of Greece (it even have a metro station) as the earliest ship out for Piraeus is very late.

We picked the normal ship instead of the express ones for economical reasons. A decision, some point during the trip, we began to regret. There ain't going to be much photos for the day as I make it a point to stay comatose during sea travel.

Check out the dual coloured footwear. This is the kind of dude who would grace the Sartorialist's website. Too bad I never took a nice potrait of him. I only realised how awesome this ghetto santa uncle looked when I was editing the photo.

so cool that he needs another one

We boarded the huge ship and moved off. I have decided that the best way to get through the 5hrs trip is to sleep and hope to wake up only when we reach the port. After that many days on the islands, sea & sky don't really fascinate you anymore.

Off we go!

Shuyi being the hardworking tourist.

The ship we took can be used to transport transportation (cars, lorrys etc) so pets are naturally allowed.

The trip was generally uneventful until a bunch of crazy religion heratics decided to park their asses right beside the bench I was sleeping on and 'sing our way home'. I know we should be more tolerant towards other people's religion and all but no one mentioned that they are gonna sing to me when I am trying to sleep.

So we reached Rafina and hopped up the first bus we see.

"Athens?", I asked the operator.

"huh?", replied the operator with a strained expression

"Athena?", I rephrased.

The operator nodded and off we go. C'mon how different is Athens and Athena?

We alighted the bus and hopped onto the metro. Once outside, I abducted a lady and demanded that she bring us to Marriott hotel. MARRIOTT? If you can choose between a 5 star and a 3 star hotel with only 5€ of price difference between them, which one would you go for?

We decided to go to Syntagma Square for dinner. That is where it's at.

Even though we cannot comprehend Greek, it is clear to us that this machine pays you to recycle. We'll try it out next time.

We passed by the Parliament building. There was a change of guards ceremony taking place.

I don't get the Ronald MacDonald shoes
but there's a lot of things I don't understand

Tomb of the Unknown Solider
IMG_5696
actually my name's George

"Throughout history, many soldiers have died in wars without their remains being identified. In modern times, nations have developed the practice of having a symbolic Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that represents the war grave of those unidentified soldiers. They usually contain the remains of a dead soldier who is unidentified (or "known but to God" as the stone is sometimes inscribed) and thought to be impossible ever to identify, so that he might serve as a symbol for all of the unknown dead wherever they fell. The anonymity of the entombed soldier is key to the symbolism of the monument: since his or her identity is unknown, it could theoretically be the tomb of anyone who fell in service of the nation in question, and therefore serves as a monument to all of their sacrifices. Much work goes into trying to find a certain soldier, and to verify that it is indeed one of the relevant nation's soldiers."

As usual, I had to walk in rounds to find the perfect place for dinner. We settled for this quirky restaurant where the price is not extravagant, the settings not touristy and there were quite a lot of locals eating there.

Bread, pickled olives and a shot for each of us.

Shuyi is not a fan of alcohol but I insisted that she down the shot. Her face crinkled up so badly after the first sip that no SK-II in the world can save her.

So I dipped the rim of the shot glass with lemon and applied salt to it. Shuyi insisted that it would help.

here goes nothing!

IMG_5718
omg! it's still the same!

Dinner was risotto and grilled sardines. The sardines were great value for money and tasted fantastic.

IMG_5706

The risotto, on the other hand, was a disgrace. It taste pretty tasty but it is in no way risotto. It's like calling a bowl of rice a bowl of porridge. Wrong.

IMG_5708
not risotto

The bill came and we left happy.

IMG_5732

Syntagma Square was packed. They were skaters and B-boys fooling around.

IMG_5742

It was getting cold so we walked back to the hotel. Guess what we saw along the way.
